Devil inserts and K2 repeats...

Two days ago I went out to training hill/K2 in Auburn with the boys for some hill repeats. I am still trying out my new inserts while trying to mediate the horrible pain in my ankles. After this training hill trip I am convinced they are not for me. I tried them for 15 miles this week. While some may say I need to give them more time, I am afraid if I give them any more time, I might seriously be hurting my foot! These inserts took away the ankle main, but created SEVERE arch pain.

It was the day after some pretty serious rain so training hill was a bit slick. Although I really wanted to do this hike in the rain, I should be thankful it didnt rain on us...the hill was VERY slick on the way down. Instead of doing the normal repeats that involve doing the entire pig farm trail from the top of K2 we decided to get three repeats in by hiking down K2 each time until the final repitition where we ran the rest of the trail. I felt pretty good, quicky reminded how difficult this hike is. After the first one I was pretty spent ( I usually only do 1). I made it through the rest, but I am very slow and timmid hiking/running down hill. Too afraid to blow out my knees. I had a pretty bad side stich on the way down the pig farm trail so I took it easy.

Yesterday evening I headed out with the FTR crew for a night run at Monte Vista Trail head. Before the run I stopped by Fleet Feet to gladly turn in my inserts. I wanted a fresh opinion of my feet and test the waters to see what shoe another person would put me in. I showed up and explained to one of the workers what was going on with my feet. To which their advice was for me to go see a doctor...not what I was expecting. I am convinced what is going on with me does not require a doctor I think it is a shoe issue. I should have never ran in the cascadias! Those really hurt my feet/ankles. After talking things over the gal wanted me to give the inserts more time. She convinced me not to return them. I really wanted to elimintate my options so I can rule out seeing a doctor. I requested to get fit for another shoe. She put me in the Montrail Fairhavens. I was a bit sceptical because they are a trail/road hybrid. I was previously fitted for the Montrail Mtn Masochist. To which my heel felt like it was slipping out of. I put on the Fairhavens and my heel felt much better/no slipping. I walked around the store in them, but it is so hard for me to tell a shoe unless I run in it. I bought them and wanted to try them on my night run, my run this afternoon and have them ready for our desolation wilderness run this Sunday!

To my suprise, I felt the difference immediatly when I took off on the run. We started off on concrete for .5 mile. Felt good. Then we hit the trail. They felt pretty good and suprisingly light. They hug my feeet like the old Solomans felt like. I like a little bulk under my feet for control reasons, It will be interesting to try them out on something more technical where I favor something lighter.

We ran 7 miles last night. It was PITCH black out! This run was along the deep channels of Folsom Lake through old oak tree forest. There was a lot of downed trees and branches making this run a challenge because it was SO dark! It was beautiful though. No complaints from my feet which is more progress than I have had in a long time! I am excited to keep trying them out. I will wear them around today at the dog park and tomorrow while helping out at Dick Collins.

Today I am doing a light run hopefully at Sterling Point to Rattlesnake. Tomorrow I need to rest. My legs feel pretty darn tired. My body feels tired. D has been getting up really early and dragging me out of bed with him. My saving grace has been wearing compression sleves to bed. Although they are not very tight I think they are helping. Sunday I am heading out to Echo Submit at 0500 for a sunrise submit. It will be horrible running at elevation, but worth the views. I think we are doing 15 miles. I really need to start seriously thinking about starting training for my 50k. I guess this is all work towards that, but mentally, I am still on vacation!
