Run on the Sly training run

Yep...that was me, Sunday after I took a GIANT spill on the Run on the Sly traning run. We set out Sunday to train at the same elevation my first half marathon will take place at during Sunday, August 21st. We were training at 3900 feet and running 16 miles...which turned into 17. I set out with a group of Folsom Trail Runners and we quickly "blazed new trails" aka got lost. We took a 2 mile detour which was actually useful since we got some siginificant hills in. The altitude quickly became an issue and I wanted to quit within minutes! Eventually we met up with the intended trail, this was around the same time my lungs started to adjust to the thin air. Including the 2 mile detour the run around the lake ended up totaling 10miles by the time we got back to the car. On the way to the car I took a hard fall on the trail, stood up, dusted myself off and remarked, "I am so hungry!". The PB&J I had eaten at 0500 was gone and I was starting to bonk. I made it back to the car and we took a refuel break, I had some PB&J, a Gu, and diluted gatorade and we were off to finish the last 6 miles.

As soon as we started to run again you could hear the moans and groans from the group as our muscles had tightened up. We stopped at the end of the levee and I looked around for any sign anyone wanted to quit with me. No luck. We kept running and one veterin runner dropped out. We though about stoping all together but I needed to get the milage in, the marathon will be here before I know it. We ran three out and intended on running three back for the total of 16. When we got three out I decided it was time to wash off the dirt from my fall, took a deep breath, and we headed back. By the time we got back to the car we checked our GPS and we had done 17 miles. Wahoo! Only 10 more miles till hitting marathon distance! YIKES! Again it was confirmed I do better at higher milage. I hit 13 miles and the jets came on. I finished feeling okay, I think having good running company helped.

After a long week at work with again, lack of hydration, training, and crappy eating the run went suprisingly well. Next week I tapper for the half marathon and only owe the man 10 miles. Hopefully heading up to Foresthill for some training.
